2018

23rd September
Please note the change of venue:

Our ‘Battle of Britain Commemoration’ will, this year, take place in St Hilda’s Church, Thornleigh Road, West Jesmond, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE2 3ET at 2 pm. St Hilda’s Church is adjacent to the Royal British Legion Club (where we hold our regular meetings). There will be a uniformed contingent from Royal Air Force Boulmer and the Northumbrian Universities Air Squadron will also be represented. Car parking space will be available at the southern end of the RBL car park but this will be restricted and any late arrivals will have to park their vehicles in the adjacent streets. The formal ‘parade’ part of the Commemoration will take place in the northern end of the RBL car park and will form up at 1:30 pm, prior to the formal inspection by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. After the formal inspection, the Mayoral party will process to the church, followed by the parade. Veterans and Air Cadets will NOT form part of this procession due to space limitations. Veterans and any Air Cadets who attend are asked to go straight to the church and to be seated (under the guidance of the Usher Team) no later than 1:45 pm. Standards will not form part of the parade but will assemble in the church, under the command of the Parade Marshal. Refreshments will be available in the lounge at the RBL after the service and all participants are welcome to join in.

The Commemoration will be followed by a Civic Reception in the Banqueting Suite in the Civic Centre, which will include a ‘World War 1’ buffet and musical entertainment will be by the Band of 5 Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and the Backworth Male Voice Choir. Entry to the reception will be restricted to holders of the formal invitation and (at the time of writing) there are a number of these left and can be obtained from our Welfare Officer (the contact details are on page 1).
